Police believe a vehicle arson in San Francisco this morning is not connected to a series of similar arson fires last month, a police spokesman said today.
The fire was reported at 1:25 a.m. at 29th Avenue and Lake Street in the city’s Seacliff neighborhood.
Officers found a newspaper on fire on top of the hood of a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said. The truck sustained only very minor damage, he said.
No arrests have been made in the case.
Williams said arson investigators do not believe the incident early this morning is related to a string of more than a dozen vehicle arson fires throughout the city in late July.
Police have noted that the fires stopped after a 62-year-old woman, Fafa Chan, was arrested July 30 for allegedly using newspapers to set fires outside two buildings earlier this year. However, Chan has not been charged for any of the vehicle arsons, some of which were also set with newspapers.
Another recent but apparently unrelated car fire occurred the morning of Aug. 20 at 21st Avenue and Balboa Street in the Richmond District. In that case, a book was used to light the fire, and fire officials speculated that it may have been a copycat crime.
