Golden Gate Bridge Closure
From Friday to Monday: From, 12:01 a.m., Saturday to 4 a.m., Monday, Golden Gate Bridge District contractors will work on the installation of a median barrier to provide a safer and more efficient system of separating opposing lanes of traffic on the bridge. During the construction work hours, the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed to all traffic except Golden Gate Transit and to people riding bikes and walking.
Below are options for those who commute between San Francisco and the North Bay Area during the bridge closure:
- Golden Gate Transit bus service will be allowed to cross the bridge
- Golden Gate Ferry will be offering expanded service, including late night service
People driving between San Francisco and the North Bay Area are advised to use alternate routes, including Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and Bay Bridge.
During the closure, the east sidewalk of the bridge will remain open to people walking and biking. The west sidewalk of the bridge and parking lots at both ends of the bridge will be closed to the public.
Travelers are advised to allow extra commute time as traffic on the Bay Bridge in and out of San Francisco may be heavy due to the closure of Golden Gate Bridge.
There will be minor delays on the Muni 28 19th Avenue and 91 Owl during the closure.
There will be no service on 76X Marin Headlands Express this Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday: The 5K/15K Hot Chocolate Run will take place inside Golden Gate Park extending to The Great Highway. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. from Martin Luther King Drive.
Traffic is anticipated to be heavy during the race along John F. Kennedy Drive, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, The Great Highway and Lincoln Way between La Playa and The Great Highway.
The following street closures will be required from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.:
- Lincoln Way between La Playa and Great Highway
- Great Highway from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard
The following Muni routes will be affected:
- 18 46th Avenue
- 44 O’Shaughnessy
UPDATE: Sunset Tunnel Re-railing Project
The Sunset Tunnel Trackway Improvement Project includes track and infrastructure replacements inside the Sunset Tunnel, located between Cole Valley and Duboce Triangle, Transit Signal Priority upgrades for nine intersections along the N Judah Line and construction of two accessible platforms at Judah Street and 28th Avenue. This multiple system upgrades to the N Judah Metro Line will make transit safer and more reliable.
Seismic upgrades to Sunset Tunnel are important part of the safety enhancement project. It will involve structural retrofit of the tunnel portal retaining walls and their foundations.
In order to maximize construction opportunities, the SFMTA has integrated multiple construction components under the Sunset Tunnel project in order to minimize the inconveniences for both N Judah riders and the community around the construction area:
- The Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades are taking place at nine intersections sequentially along the N Judah Line. The TSP system will use technology to reduce dwelling time at traffic signals for Muni light rail vehicles by holding green lights longer.
- The construction of two new wheelchair accessible platforms on Judah and 28th Avenue has begun. Crews are working to reconstruct the inbound stop from Mondays to Fridays. The stop is currently not in service. Muni customers can board N Judah rail vehicle at the temporary stop at 27th Avenue. This work requires traffic lane closures.
The new platform will include longer boarding islands and in compliant of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) curb ramps, making Muni Metro system safer and easier to use for all customers.
Project Update:
The tunnel work will resume this weekend. From approximately 8 p.m., Friday through 5 a.m.,Monday, the SFMTA crews will work to replace track and other infrastructure inside the Sunset Tunnel. Bus shuttles will provide substitution service for the N Judah Line between Church and Duboce streets and Ocean Beach. Regular rail service will operate between Caltrain Depot at 4th/King streets and Church and Duboce streets.
The Sunset Tunnel work is scheduled for 12 more weekends from now and June 2015. The next tentative work schedule will be on the weekends of January 23 and January 30.
The Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades at nine intersections along the N Judah Line: The work on Irving Street between 3rd and 9th avenues will continue until the end of January.
This weekend: Crews will be installing signal loops between the tracks at intersections of 7th and 8th Avenue on Irving Street. This work will take place between 7 and 10 p.m., Friday and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday.
UPDATE: Folsom Street Off-Ramp Realignment Project
The San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) continues re-construction of the Folsom Street off-ramp from westbound Interstate 80 to Fremont Street. This off-ramp configuration will facilitate a better gateway that leads into a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood. Installation of a new traffic signal at the off-ramp intersection will allow for a newly constructed continuous sidewalk and bike lanes on the east side of Fremont Street.
This construction work is anticipated to be completed in April of 2015.
During the construction period, the 108 Treasure Island Muni route will be affected during all hours of service.
UPDATE: Sewer Restoration Work
Crews from the Public Utilities Commission and San Francisco Public Works will continue the installation work of a new sewer main pipeline on Spear Street between Market and Mission streets. This construction project is anticipated to last until spring of 2015.
Construction work will continue to take place at the intersection of Spear and Mission streets. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day.
During the construction hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.:
- No street parking will be allowed
- Sidewalk will remain open for pedestrian traffic
- Local access will be allowed
- With an exception of Muni buses, the intersection of Spear and Mission streets will be close to all other traffic
During the closure, there may be brief delays on the following Muni lines and routes:

- 6 Parnassus
- 14 Mission
- 14 Mission Limited
- 14 Owl
- 21 Hayes
- 31 Balboa
- L Owl
- K Morning Shuttle
- M Morning Shuttle
UPDATE: Central Subway Construction
Central Subway construction work on Stockton Street in Union Square recommenced. Stockton Street between Ellis and Post streets will remain closed to vehicles. Ellis Street is closed from Stockton to mid-block. Please follow detour signage.
4th Street between Harrison and Bryant streets will remain closed to vehicular traffic while the construction of the portal is underway. This closure will be in effect until the end of February 2015.
