Project Update:

Beginning at approximately 8 p.m., Friday and through 5 a.m., Monday, the SFMTA will continue the weekend construction to replace track and other infrastructure inside the Sunset Tunnel.  The construction work is scheduled for 15 weekends between November 2014 and June 2015.

Additional construction work will take place on the weekend of November 21.  The work will be suspended for the rest of this year and will resume in early 2015 after the holidays.

During weekend construction, the SFMTA will provide bus substitution service:

  • The N Judah rail service will be substituted with bus shuttles between Church/Duboce streets and Ocean Beach.
  • The bus shuttles will begin to operate at about 7 p.m. on Friday and will run during regular service hours until the morning of the following Monday.
  • The bus shuttles will follow the N Judah Line route making regular stops except for the tunnel portion where buses will be operated off on Haight Street.
  • Regular N Judah rail service will continue to provide service between Caltrain Depot and Church/Duboce streets.
  • The N Judah stops at Church/Duboce will provide a transfer point between bus shuttles and trains for Muni customers.
  • The weekend N Judah Owl bus service will not be affected.

Other Ongoing N Judah System Improvements:

In order to maximize construction opportunities, the SFMTA has integrated multiple construction components under the Sunset Tunnel project in order to minimize the inconveniences for both N Judah riders and the community around the construction area:

  1. The Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades are taking place at nine intersections sequentially along the N Judah Line. Currently, crews are working on Irving Street between 3rd and 9th avenues.  The TSP system will use technology to reduce dwelling time at traffic signals for Muni light rail vehicles by holding green lights longer.
  2. The construction of two new wheelchair accessible platforms on Judah and 28th Avenue has begun. Crews are working to reconstruct the inbound stop from Mondays to Fridays. The stop is currently not in service. Muni customers can board N Judah rail vehicle at the temporary stop at 27th Avenue. This work requires traffic lane closures.

The new platform will include longer boarding islands and in compliant of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) curb ramps, making Muni Metro system safer and easier to use for all customers.

The installation of new, red transit-only lanes on Market Street will continue. The Market Street red carpet lane will be similar to the ones already installed on Church, 3rd, Geary and O’Farrell streets.

The installation of red lane treatment will be conducted over Friday and Saturday nights through November.

All traffic will be diverted to the curb lane during the installation work.  Cross traffic will be allowed at all intersections.
