A man with a history of domestic violence who shot and killed himself after shooting a woman he lived with in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood early Friday has been identified.
Cedric Young Jr., 29, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Friday morning after shooting and critically injuring a woman he shared an apartment with following a series of domestic disturbances at the home, according to San Francisco police and the medical examiner’s office.
The woman Young shot remained in the hospital today, according to police. Her name has not been released and an update on her condition was not immediately available.
Police said Young shot the victim and himself around 5 a.m. Friday. Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the shooting in an apartment in the 500 block of Natoma Street near Seventh Street, where they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body and Young suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Young died at the scene and the woman was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital.
Police said the suicide and attempted murder was the culmination of a series of calls from the same address over the previous two days.
Officers responded to domestic disturbance calls at the apartment on Thursday around 8:30 p.m., 9:15 p.m. and 10 p.m. and arrested Young on suspicion of public intoxication.
The 29-year-old was taken to county jail and released.
Police said officers responded to another domestic disturbance at the building around 4 a.m. Friday and encountered Young, who told police he wanted to get some of his belongings from the home.
Officers stayed at the scene while Young retrieved some items from the apartment and saw him leave.
The suspect apparently returned about an hour later and forced his way back into the apartment, where he shot the victim and himself.
Detectives continue to investigate the attempted murder and suicide and are looking into how Young obtained a gun.
Police said the suspect was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in 2012 but that the case was later dropped.
