San Francisco’s Police Activities League will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Tuesday with a fundraiser and the group’s first hall of fame induction ceremony.
PAL, established by the San Francisco Police Department in 1959 to address juvenile delinquency, provides opportunities for youth to engage in the community and participate in organized youth sports.
According to the group, more than 5,000 kids participate each year in PAL’s baseball, football, basketball, soccer, boxing, cheerleading, judo and law enforcement cadet programs.
Focused particularly on low-income youth who wouldn’t otherwise have access to extra-curricular activities, PAL allows them to participate regardless of ability to pay.
Some of PAL’s most recognized former participants–including former police Chief Heather Fong, Police Officers Association President Gary Delagnes and National Football League player Donald Strickland–will be honored at Tuesday night’s fundraising gala at the United Irish Cultural Center, located at 2700 45th St.
Tickets are $75 per person.
