A large pool of water has dried and debris has been cleared from a San Francisco street where a water main burst and flooded the roadway this morning, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokeswoman said.
The main break occurred around 8:40 a.m. at Bryant and Alameda streets near the Potrero Center shopping center, according to SFPUC spokeswoman Jean Walsh.
The 16-inch pipe is part of the Auxiliary Water Supply System, which was being pressure tested this morning, according to Walsh.
The water supply system is used for firefighting and other emergencies.
The street was closed after water flooded the area, but reopened around 4:30 p.m. to traffic, including San Francisco Municipal Railway buses on the 9-San Bruno and 27-Bryant lines that had been detouring around the incident.
Repairs to the pipe will begin Friday and will leave the roadway only partially closed during the day, Walsh said.
There will be no repairs made over the weekend, which means crews will likely return to the area on Monday, she said.
No customers were affected by the water main break after crews turned off water service this morning.
The flooded roadway did not affect any businesses or buildings, Walsh said.
Carlos Muela, owner of the Soma Streat Food Park at the corner of 11th and Division streets, near where the water pooled, said the flooding did not reach the food park, but the road closures and pooling water made it difficult for customers to drive into the area to watch the early 9 a.m. World Cup game between America and Germany.
He said some of the food trucks also had difficultly navigating into the park with the closed roads and rising water.
