A man who allegedly struck and killed a man sleeping near an Interstate Highway 80 off-ramp in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood early Sunday morning has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and DUI, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Jaime Juarez, 27, was charged today in connection with the fatal DUI crash reported at 1:10 a.m. Sunday near the Fifth Street off-ramp from westbound I-80.
Juarez allegedly struck Wilbert Williams, 62, a transient out of San Francisco, who was sleeping near the ramp.
Juarez was driving a Toyota SUV when he allegedly went off the roadway and into the dirt embankment, striking Williams. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
Juarez, the only person in the car, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries before he was taken into custody, according to the California Highway Patrol.
He was charged today with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two counts of DUI causing injury while under the influence of alcohol and having a blood-alcohol content of .08 or higher, according to the district attorney’s office.
He is being held in custody on $700,000 bail, according the San Francisco’s Sheriff’s Department. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, according to the district attorney’s office.
