President Barack Obama appointed San Francisco treasurer Jose Cisneros to an administrative post Wednesday.
Cisneros was named as vice chair of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans while more than a dozen others were appointed as members.
John W. Rogers Jr., CEO and founder of Ariel Investments, was named chair.
Cisneros said of the appointment, “I am honored to have been chosen by the President to advise him and the Secretary of the Treasury on how to promote financial capability in young Americans. This issue is of vital importance for our financial well-being as a nation and for individual Americans’ ability to access economic opportunity and mobility.”
He said he would share the success of financial programs in San Francisco such as the Kindergarten to College initiative, which helps families save money to be able to afford sending students to college.
The presidential advisory council was created last June to advise the president and his cabinet on how to help young Americans with financial planning starting at a young age and through community resources and technology.
In a statement about the appointments, Obama said Wednesday, “These dedicated and accomplished individuals will be valued additions to my Administration as we tackle the important challenges facing America. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
