Several crewmembers and passengers on a flight headed for Hong Kong from San Francisco International Airport were injured when the plane hit severe turbulence Tuesday evening, an airline spokeswoman said.
Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX879 departed SFO around 11:50 a.m.
Monday heading for Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific spokeswoman Julie Jarratt said.
While over the Hokkaido, Japan, airspace, around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hong Kong time, the Boeing 747-400 experienced turbulence, injuring several passengers and two crewmembers, Jarratt said.
Jarratt said the injured people received preliminary treatment during the flight.
When the plane landed at about 6:30 p.m. Hong Kong time, the two crewmembers and six passengers received additional treatment at hospitals, she said.
The extent of their injuries was not immediately available.
Cathay Pacific is providing assistance to the affected passengers and staff, according to Jarratt.
Twenty-one crewmembers and 321 passengers were onboard the flight.
