Freezing temperatures and snow in Chicago and on the East Coast have caused the cancellation of dozens of flights in and out of Bay Area airports today.

At San Francisco International Airport, there have been 19 canceled arrivals and departures, duty manager Larry Mares said.

Those flights were heading to and from airports in Chicago, Newark, New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston and Philadelphia, he said.

At Mineta San Jose International Airport, five flights to or from New York City, Boston and Chicago have been canceled, airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said. She said another flight to Chicago has been delayed by about 40 minutes.

“We’re continuing to see impacts,” she said.

She advised passengers to go online and check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Oakland International Airport has seen three canceled departures and six canceled arrivals so far today, spokesman Scott Wintner said. He said weather problems have created an air traffic backlog.
