Police in San Francisco’s Ingleside District cited several San Francisco Municipal Railway bus riders this week during an enforcement operation aimed at stemming transit crime in the area.
“Operation Safe Muni” was prompted by a recent increase robberies and other crime aboard Muni buses, including the stabbing of an 11-year-old boy on a bus in the Mission District.
The suspect in the stabbing has still not been found, police said today.
Ingleside Station Capt. David Lazar said that Tuesday’s operation in his district, conducted by plainclothes officers on the 14, 49, and 9x bus lines, netted 22 citations.
Eight people were cited for boarding the back of the bus, five for eating on the bus, and four for evading fares, Lazar said. Police also issued citations for youths possessing tobacco, riding a skateboard on the sidewalk, littering at a bus stop and for a minor with alcohol.
Lazar said there will be further similar operations.
