Glide Seeking Volunteers To Serve Thanksgiving Dinner

A yellow tow truck arrived at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco late this morning to deliver 44 turkeys donated by AAA that will be prepared as part of Thanksgiving meals for the needy.

The Rev. Cecil Williams stood in front of the church, located at 330 Ellis St. in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood, to receive the turkeys. He said Glide plans to serve 5,000 full meals to families and individuals on Thanksgiving.

The meal also includes ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, gravy, stuffing, pie, ice cream and a drink, he said.

Glide also provides a to-go bag on Thanksgiving that contains food that will get people through that evening and the next day, he said.

“This year we’ve had less donations and more people to feed,” Williams said.

Glide needs about 500 volunteers to prepare Thanksgiving meals, he said. More information on how to volunteer or donate to Glide can be found online at www.glide.org/.

Siobhan McFeeney, chief operating officer for AAA in Northern California, Nevada and Utah, said AAA has donated turkeys to Glide for 17 years and that her AAA region will deliver 10 tons of turkeys to 80 nonprofits this holiday season.
