Another Construction Worker Killed At Site Of New 49ers Stadium

A worker was killed this morning at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health said.

The fatal accident was reported at 6:45 a.m. at the under-construction stadium at Centennial Boulevard and Tasman Drive that will eventually be home to the San Francisco 49ers.

The victim, an employee of Gerdau Ameristeel, a subcontractor for the stadium project, was killed when a bundle of rebar fell on him, Cal/OSHA spokesman Peter Melton said.

Cal/OSHA officials have arrived at the scene and are investigating the death, he said.

Jonathan Harvey, stadium project co-director for Turner-Devcon, the general contractor for the project, will be at the site this morning to provide details about the incident, a company employee said.

This is the second construction death at the stadium. In June 2012, a worker was killed when the counterweight of an elevator “came down and struck him.”
