Victim Of Fatal Tackling By DPT Officer Identified

A man who died after being tackled by a parking control officer who allegedly saw him attacking a woman in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood last week has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as 28-year-old Nelson Tzabek.

The incident was reported at about 12:35 p.m. Thursday near Laguna Street and Larch Way, just west of Jefferson Square Park, police said.

A woman was walking south on Laguna toward Turk Street when Tzabek allegedly attacked her, pulling her hair and knocking her to the ground, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

A San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic officer witnessed the attack and tackled the man, who fell and suffered some sort of injury, Shyy said.

Tzabek was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Shyy said. The cause of his death has not yet been determined.

The woman who was attacked complained of pain to her back and arm and was also hospitalized, police said.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees DPT officers, has placed the officer on administrative leave pending an investigation, SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose said.

Rose said the agency is fully cooperating with police in their investigation into the death.
