PG&E Says Failed Switch Behind Tuesday Afternoon Power Outage

5:31 PM: Power is back on for nearly all roughly 3,900 PG&E customers in parts of San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood and Mission District affected by an outage this afternoon, a utility spokesman said.

Power was resorted to all but 19 customers around 4:40 p.m. after the outage was reported at 3:35 p.m. in parts of Potrero Hill and the southern Mission District, spokesman Joe Molica said.

The remaining customers are expected to have power back by around 6 p.m., Molica said.

The cause of the outage was a switch that failed near where Cesar Chavez Street hits Interstate Highway 280.

Molica said initially there was a report of car hitting a power pole in that area, but he said that information was unfounded.

4:45 PM: About 3,900 PG&E customers in parts of San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood and Mission District are without power this afternoon, a utility spokesman said.

Around 3:35 p.m. the outage was reported in parts of Potrero Hill and the southern Mission District, spokesman Joe Molica said.

Crews are on site working to restore as many customers as possible, Molica said. However, there was no estimated time of restoration.

The cause of the outage is believed to be an equipment failure near where Cesar Chavez Street hits Interstate Highway 280.

Molica said there was a report of car hitting a power pole in that area, which may be a factor in the outage.

San Francisco Municipal Railway spokesman Paul Rose said traffic lights are out between Castro and Mission streets from 14th to 22nd streets.

Rose said motorists and Muni operators are asked to treat downed lights as a stop sign.
