With blustery conditions in the forecast, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Bay Area today.
The advisory was set to take effect at 11 a.m. The weather service has also issued a gale warning for boaters beginning at 1 p.m., forecaster Austin Cross said.
Mariners are advised to take to the water only if they are experienced and have properly equipped vessels.
Cross said northwest winds will be blowing through the Bay Area at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph expected in some spots.
The winds have blown sand onto San Francisco’s Great Highway, prompting the extended closure of the road, which runs along Ocean Beach.
Great Highway was closed in both directions between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way beginning Saturday evening, Department of Public Works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon said.
Sand on the roadway also prompted the closure of the northbound lanes of Great Highway farther south between Sloat and Skyline boulevards shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday, Gordon said.
There is no estimate yet for when the roadway will reopen, she said.
“When the winds are still blowing hard, we’re not going to rush to get it open,” Gordon said. “We need the winds to subside.”
