A man accused of strangling his wife in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood last month remains in the hospital after stabbing himself in the neck when he was confronted by authorities that night.
Ying Hua Wu, 74, has been charged with murder and three counts assault on a firefighter with a deadly weapon for allegedly manually strangling his wife, prosecutors said.
When firefighters arrived to try to revive Wu’s wife, 72-year-old Hao Mei Wu, he was combative and held a knife, which he then used to stab himself in the neck, police said.
While Hao Mei Wu succumbed to her injuries, police and firefighters were able to take the knife away from her husband and arrested him before transporting him to San Francisco General Hospital.
Wu was initially scheduled to be arraigned in court last Thursday but did not appear because of medical reasons, and missed the arraignment again today because of what his defense attorney Erik Babcock said were “medical reasons.”
Prosecutor Linda Allen offered to have the arraignment done at the hospital, but the judge decided to delay the hearing until Jan. 12.
Wu remains in custody at the hospital in lieu of $10 million bail, district attorney’s office spokesman Omid Talai said.
