policeblotter_sfa.jpg8:04 PM: An off-duty police officer helped thwart a burglary at a home in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The burglary was reported at 4:23 p.m. by the female officer, who saw a suspect inside her next-door neighbor’s home in the 500 block of Kansas Street, according to police.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak said that the officer noticed the nervous-looking suspect peering into windows of two different homes and knocking on doors before he broke into the home.

The officer called 911 then tried to chase the suspect, who ran out the back of the house and hopped over two fences before he was taken into custody, police said.

The suspect, Christopher L. Ortiz, a 38-year-old man with no local address but who had formerly lived in Texas, was arrested on suspicion of attempted residential burglary and possession of stolen property, as well as evading arrest, Andraychak said.

Police allegedly recovered a smartphone from Ortiz.

Officers contacted the home’s owner, who led police through the house, which had been ransacked. Officers found jewelry and a laptop that Ortiz allegedly dropped while fleeing from the home, Andraychak said.
