San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee introduced a charter amendment at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting that would require extra analysis of any legislation proposed by the board that could result in a loss of jobs.
The amendment, introduced by Lee during his monthly voter-mandated appearance in front of the board, would require the city controller’s office to report on any such legislation before it received final approval, and would require it to be referred to the city’s Small Business Commission as well.
The legislation is an expansion of Proposition I, passed by voters in 2004, which created the city’s Office of Economic Analysis to review the potential effects of policies being considered by the city.
Lee’s amendment will be placed on the June 2012 ballot if it receives support from a majority of the 11 supervisors.
“I firmly believe that it is City Hall’s responsibility to help small businesses grow and promote job growth in the private sector,” Lee said in a statement.
“By including the voices of business owners and employees and evaluating impacts and alternatives to job loss in the city, we are improving transparency and accountability in our lawmaking process,” he said.
