As previously reported, former BART cop Johannes Mehserle is back in court, along with four other officers accused of using excessive force in a November 2008 incident with Oakland resident Kenneth Carrethers.
Now, as the Ex reports, it’s not Johannes who’s making waves at the hearings, but his father, Todd.
Todd Mehserle reportedly “said, ‘Smile, Bobby!’ and ‘Have a good Thanksgiving,’ in a very sarcastic, abrasive tone” to the uncle of Oscar Grant, the man Mehserle was convicted of killing on New Year’s Day 2009, outside the courtroom.
Todd Mehserle also reportedly snapped a photo of Grant’s uncle in the court hallway, which is forbidden in the federal courthouse.
According to a 2009 report from SFist, Todd Mehserle has “a long history of participation on internet message boards” and “is an outspoken conservative with a history of anger management issues.”
The elder Mehserle continued to compete for the “Michael Lohan of BART cop fathers” award when he set up camp in McCovey cove on a boat adorned with a “Justice 4 Johannes” banner in October, 2010.
That boat’s opposition was another vessel with its own “Justice 4 Oscar Grant” banner.
In this week’s case of alleged misbehavior, after Grant’s uncle informed Judge Edward Chen of the interaction, the judge promptly ordered that Todd Mehserle be “removed for the remainder of the trial.”
According to the Chron, BART’s lawyers plan to present their case today. The jury is expected to begin deliberations in the trial on Thursday.
