A pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a car in San Francisco’s Outer Mission neighborhood this morning, a fire department spokeswoman said.
The fire department received a report around 6:40 a.m. of a man, possibly in his 50s or 60s, who had been hit by a vehicle near San Jose Avenue and De Long Street, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said the vehicle, which was driven by a man in his 30s, was heading north on San Jose Avenue when it struck the pedestrian.
The pedestrian hit the front windshield of the car and landed in the street, Esparza said.
Emergency medical crews performed CPR and took the man to a hospital, Talmadge said.
Esparza said the man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision, Esparza said.
It is unclear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, Esparza said.
Police are investigating, among other things, how fast the driver was traveling, Esparza said. The driver, who was distraught about the incident, was not injured, he said.
