State Attorney General Kamala Harris will be in San Francisco today to attend a special ceremony that aims to recruit African-Americans to join the national bone marrow registry.
Harris is scheduled to officiate the renewal of marriage vows for Lateefah Simon and Kevin Weston at San Francisco City Hall.
Weston, a 44-year-old Bay Area journalist, has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of leukemia, and must undergo a bone marrow transplant in less than two months in order to survive, according to organizers of the event.
A bone marrow match can help save Weston’s life, but only about 7 percent of the nation’s 10 million registered marrow donors are African American, organizers said.
Harris and several city supervisors are expected to attend the ceremony and bone marrow drive, which is scheduled to be held in City Hall’s North Light Court beginning at 1 p.m.
