Nothing could “rain on the parade” for giddy San Francisco Giants fans today, but forecasters are predicting that revelers could get caught up in some drizzle this afternoon.
Light rain is expected in San Francisco by 1 p.m., with heavier showers between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., forecaster Steve Anderson said.
The Giants’ victory parade started at 11 a.m. near the foot of Market Street and will end with an hours-long celebration this afternoon in Civic Center Plaza.
The Giants should have no problems handling the rain, though. The team won the National League Championship Series last week in a torrential downpour at AT&T Park before sweeping the Detroit Tigers in four games to win the World Series on Sunday.
The rain could, however, dampen the spirits of some trick-or-treaters tonight.
Anderson urged those out celebrating Halloween to incorporate a raincoat or umbrella into their costumes. He noted that the rain is expected to linger into the early morning hours.
“It’s going to be a wet night tonight during the prime trick-or-treating time,” he said.
Regardless of the weather, local trick-or-treaters are preparing for a day of candy, costumes and plenty of spookiness.
With Halloween falling mid-week, many festivities in San Francisco are happening at schools, where young revelers are dressed as goblins, ghosts, princesses–and in “Gangnam Style” costumes inspired by the hit Korean pop music video by Psy.
Parades, haunted houses and Halloween-themed schoolyard activities as planned at campuses through the San Francisco Unified School District.
Another family-friendly Halloween celebration in San Francisco will be held at 2 p.m. at the Eureka Valley Recreation Center gym at 100 Collingwood St. The afternoon will be complete with a costume contest and a neighborhood parade and trick-or-treating hosted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charity group known for their extravagant outfits.
In San Francisco’s Bayview District, “Shaun the Sheep,” a real-life sheep, will be joining the celebration at the Bayview Opera House from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Activities there include pumpkin carving, free treats, a haunted house and more.
Also in the Bayview, a “Safe Halloween” trail has been established along Third Street to allow kids to trick-or-treat at local businesses between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
For adults celebrating Halloween, law enforcement agencies are issuing a warning that wearing a costume doesn’t mask drunken driving.
Authorities recommend designating a sober driver if drinking is part of the plan tonight or taking a taxi or public transportation to get home safely.
Extra patrols will be deployed throughout the Bay Area tonight to crack down on drunken driving.
For youngsters walking house to house for trick-or-treating, police advise parents to dress children in appropriate costumes that are flame retardant and not too long, to avoid tripping and falling.
Children may dart into the street unexpectedly, so motorists are advised to be mindful of children walking through neighborhoods.
