A man was convicted Tuesday of sexually abusing a minor and possessing child pornography in San Francisco, prosecutors said.
Ricardo Asturias, 68, had been accused of sexually abusing a 4-year-old family member repeatedly starting in January 2008 and ending in October 2010, when the victim told her mother about the abuse, according to the district attorney’s office.
After the victim’s mother told police about the allegations, investigators obtained computers belonging to Asturias and found nearly 1,000 images of child pornography, prosecutors said.
During the trial, the victim testified against Asturias, as did his two biological children who said he also sexually abused them more than 30 years ago, prosecutors said.
A San Francisco Superior Court jury deliberated for just 45 minutes on Tuesday before finding Asturias guilty of both felony counts, district attorney’s office spokesman Alex Bastian said.
Asturias faces up to 16 years and eight months in prison when he is sentenced in December. He will also be required to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender.
“Thanks to the bravery of this young girl, this lifelong predator will be going to state prison for a very long time,” District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement, adding that the conviction will “send a powerful message that San Francisco will not tolerate the abuse of our children.”
