Shootings in SOMA and the Mission District claimed two lives this weekend. According to SFPD, suspect information was not available in either case, and no arrests had been made.

At around 2:45 AM on Saturday, a 2219-year-old man was shot in the upper torso as he walked on Caledonia Street at 16th Street, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The victim ran to 16th and Valencia streets, where he collapsed, Esparza said. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. (Mission Local reports that the events occurred on 15th Street, not 16th. At publication time, the Appeal was unable to confirm this detail with SFPD.)

On Monday, the medical examiner’s office identified the victim as 19-year-old San Francisco man Jose Escobar.

The suspect fled east on 16th Street in an unknown vehicle. No suspect or vehicle description is available.

The shooting does not appear to be gang related, Esparza said.

In San Francisco’s second homicide of the weekend, just after 11 p.m.on Saturday night, SFPD made a welfare check on Mission and Fifth streets. Arriving officers located a man in his 30s inside a car suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, Esparza said.

Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.

This follows a similar shooting Sunday, October 7, in which two men were shot inside their car on Mission near Fourth street.

The driver in the October 7 shooting, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim in that shooting was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests have been made in that case, and suspect information has not been made available to the media.

Anyone who witnessed any of these crimes or who has information about suspects is urged to contact police at (415) 553-1145 or anonymously at (415) 575-4444. Anonymous texts, beginning with the phrase ‘SFPD,’ can be sent to TIP411.
