A bomb squad responded to suspicious devices found in an apartment in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood Monday night, a police spokesman said.
The incident began at around 4 p.m. Monday when an employee at 101 Market St. noticed that another female employee was exhibiting signs of psychiatric distress, police Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
The woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for evaluation. While talking to responding officers, she indicated that she had fired a round inside her home, Manfredi said.
Officers went to her residence in the 300 block of Columbus Avenue, which is near Broadway, and found a bullet hole, Manfredi said.
Police went inside her apartment and found handguns and suspicious devices that they were unable to identify.
The bomb squad was called in and the apartment building’s residents were evacuated “to err on the side of safety,” Manfredi said.
As of 11 p.m. it was not known if the devices were explosive and Manfredi said the bomb squad was still processing the devices found at the scene.
Columbus Avenue was closed near Broadway and Grant Avenue as emergency crews investigated.
