chiu.crew.jpgThe campaign headquarters for San Francisco mayoral candidate and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu was burglarized and vandalized on Sunday night, campaign officials said today.

The looting occurred sometime late Sunday, campaign manager Nicole Derse said. Chiu’s campaign headquarters is located at 1800 Van Ness Ave.

Thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment was stolen, and the thieves went through confidential campaign materials, removing them from drawers and leaving them scattered on the floor, according to Derse.

“If this was a politically motivated attempt to distract the Chiu for Mayor campaign on the eve of Election Day, it has failed miserably,” Derse said in a statement.

“David and our team of volunteers are as determined as ever to get our message out to San Franciscans in these last hours before voters go to the polls,” she said.

“This matter has been referred to the SFPD for a full investigation, and we are confident that they will get to the bottom of it,” Derse said.

Police were not immediately available to provide more information on the burglary.
