Warning, aspiring laptop thieves — the next computer you swipe might be packing a surprise.
As the Ex reports, SFPD has recently launched a LoJack computer decoy program, in which cops dressed in normal clothes will be hanging out on buses and park benches with “enticing laptops.”
LoJack technology enables those desirable laptops to be tracked via GPS in case a robber succeeds in stealing the decoy computer. Ideally, cops (who “look like anybody walking around,” a police spokesperson told the Ex) will be brandishing the high-end laptops, just waiting for someone to swipe it.
When a crook comes along and attempts to steal it, backup officers will then appear and make their arrest.
According to SFPD, though, they haven’t needed the GPS, as every robber has been nabbed on the spot. The result, SFPD says, has been a decrease in robberies.
