We’re number one? Well, kind of — and number two, and number four, if several recent linkbait lists are to be believed.
According to Conde Nast Traveler, San Francisco fell from the top tourist destination to #2, thanks to 90% of travelers finding Charleston, SC to be “friendly” compared to only 66.9% of folks finding friendliness in SF.
The honor, which was bestowed on Charleston by native Stephen Colbert (no, really.) marks the first time in 18 years that SF hasn’t been at the top. the Chron’s Matier and Ross report that some believe factors in SF’s drop from the top are the reported rise in homelessness in the city, as well as increased complaints of aggressive panhandling.
Perhaps that drop in friendliness is why, as ABC7 reports, SF’s been ranked as the fourth angriest US city. The Daily Beast recently issued the list, determining their results by the amount of Tea Party supporters and participants in localized “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations. According to the Daily Beast, for every one million people in the SF metro area, there are 6,000 protestors. Only Seattle, Portland, and Denver were higher in anger.
As the SF Business Times also reports, California’s ever-increasing gas prices, which make it the highest in the contiguous United States, might play a part in our anger. For the second week in a row, prices rose, setting the average price for gas in California at $3.866. But in a loss we’re happy to have, SF also recently lost its title of highest gas prices in the state when San Luis Obispo usurped it with an average gas price of $3.943, half a cent higher than the city’s.
And, finally, one list where we’re named number one: As the Chron notes, Parents Magazine ranks SF numero uno in their 10 Healthiest Cities for Families list. “The City by the Bay rose to the top of our list in part because of its gutsy moves to bring healthier foods to schools,” they write, also noting our 182 playgrounds, 82 recreation centers, and 60 soccer fields.
