bart_generic.jpgBART concluded service shortly after 2 a.m. Monday morning, finally recovering from service delays after a man was struck by a BART train and killed in an apparent suicide Sunday night, BART officials said.

A Pittsburg/Bay Point-bound BART train operator reported at 11:20 p.m. Sunday that there was a person under the train at Colma station, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

Electricity to the third rail was immediately shut down and BART police responded to the scene. At 11:56 p.m. the San Mateo County coroner’s office was contacted.

Allison said witnesses reported that the man who was struck by the train jumped from a stairwell onto the platform as the train was approaching.

Passengers on the train were evacuated to a separate train to proceed to their destination, Allison said.

The incident caused delays on all trains operating at the time keeping BART stations open well beyond their normal closing times.
