As previously reported, SFPD had been searching for a missing man known for greeting San Francisco Giants players as they arrived at AT&T Park. Unlike many of these missing person stories, however, this one has a happy(ish) ending.
For years, 43-year-old Billy Chamberlain had been a constant presence at Giants games, greeting team members as they arrived at the ballpark’s entrance at Second and King streets, police said.
But Chamberlain had not been seen at any Giants games for the past month or so, and his whereabouts were unknown–circumstances that prompted the police investigation.
“We’re hopeful the police can try to find him,” Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter said earlier this month. “I think there’s a lot of members of the Giants organization who are very concerned about him.”
Now, as the Chron reports, Chamberlain has turned up at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, looking quite different from the photo of him circulated by SFPD.
Chamberlain told the Chron’s Henry Schulman “I just decided it was time. I was up there (in San Francisco) for three years, and now I’m down here.”
On hearing the news, Giants manager Bruce Bochy told Schulman, “I’m happy. We were hoping he just went off on his own. It’s good to know he’s healthy and moved on.”
Chamberlain is currently living on the streets of LA, and Schulman reports he has “no desire to sleep in a homeless shelter.”
