San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu proposed at Tuesday’s board meeting the creation of an online database that would allow the public to better understand and keep track of the city’s budget.
Chiu said the budget, which is $6.83 billion for the current fiscal year, is “enormously complicated” but that “with technology we have new tools” to understand it.
The database would include a variety of information, including spending amounts, recipients of the spending and the sources of the funding, according to Chiu’s office.
Chiu said the federal government and many states, counties and cities around the U.S. already have some version of an online budget database.
“It would help increase the confidence of our constituents in their government,” Chiu said.
