In the wake of two hate crimes that occurred within a week of each other, Stop the Violence has planned a march this weekend to raise awareness and “take back the streets.”
According to the Bay Area Reporter, the march will begin at 3pm Saturday at Jane Warner Plaza on Castro and Market.
The march will then head to Market and Sanchez, to commemorate a recent attack there. As previously reported, a 52-year-old Santa Barbara man was walking in the area last Saturday when he was approached by three suspects who struck him with a baseball bat while yelling “faggot” at him. They also took his keys. No arrests have been made and the victim suffered minor injuries, including bruising on the side of his body. The suspects have been described as white males in their mid-teens who were wearing dark clothing.
After that, marchers will head to Blue restaurant at 2337 Market St. where another hate crime had occurred at about 2am on Sunday, July 31. As previously reported, a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence was attacked by a woman who called him a “faggot” and shoved him. He was in the Sisters’ usual uniform of nun costume and black-and-white face paint. No arrests have been made in that case either.
According to the event’s Facebook page, in total four locations where hate crimes took place since July 31st will be visited, concluding at Castro and 18th St.
“Make signs, bring horns,” says the event’s page. “We need to make everyone aware that we will not tolerate violence against GLBT in San Francisco and abroad.”
