gay_flag_lede.jpgAs the country continues to pull in many different directions on the issue of LGBTQ equality, some suggest that a byproduct of those tensions might be an increase in hate crimes. Supporting that theory are recent statistics from local groups.

As the Ex reports, reports of hate crimes against LGBTQ people have increased from 129 in 2009 to 213 in 2010, a 65% increase.

Eight LGBTQ hate crimes were reported during this year’s Pride celebrations, up significantly from last year’s single report, says the Ex.

SFPD could not provide any details on the circumstances of the crimes, but National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs’ Roberta Sklar says, “We’ve also seen that (hate crimes) occur at certain times when relevant LGBT legislative issues have risen to a high level of visibility.”
