Improved Muni on Rock Photo

Learning to drive is hard on us all — I still hear my mother screaming “BRAKE” any time I approach one intersection near my parents’ place, where I slammed into a stop sign. I can only imagine that learning to drive a Muni bus is way harder than my mom’s 80s era Honda Civic (though it was a stick, just sayin), and when you have to learn how to do it within a stone’s throw of one of SF’s best known Munispotters, the pressure’s on.

Transit blogger Akit was at his day job at SF State when, he tells the Appeal, a Muni bus driver in training apparently “ran over a rock at the traffic circle and got stuck.”

“My office” he says “is next door to the accident site.” Kismet!

Or not: “most driving trainees drive around SF State and Lake Merced areas as it provides all kinds of different roads, from main drags to winding streets,” Akit says. Better than than the wild streets of New Whiteland that my mom had a learner-permitted me terrorize.

“The campus police and a Muni supervisor were on site” Akit says of the scene, and by 11:40, the damaged training coach was being towed away.
