We’ve all had it happen — your awesome fun drinking buddy, with whom you’ve shared all sorts of crazy shenanigans across SF, gets married and settles down. Then the couple has a kid. We’re not going to be one of those families that runs to the suburbs, 415 for the long haul! your pal tells you, even as they suddenly start to notice that there are, like, scary homeless people all over the place! Like, where kids can see them! Then someone takes a shit on their house. The next thing you know, your once-fun friend is packing up his family and rushing to the ‘burbs to shack up with the in-laws.
At least, that’s my highly fanciful reading of today’s report from Matier and Ross that Gavin Newsom, his expecting wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom and daughter Montana have left SF for Siebel’s “parents’ five-bedroom, five-bath home in the Marin County town of Ross.”
The Newsom family reportedly got a great deal on the $2,738,000, four bedroom, 3.5 bath house they’ve been living in at 1581 Masonic — but, apparently, the deal wasn’t enough to force them to make do. Newsom spokesman Francisco Castillo told M&R the family needed to put their stuff in storage to couchsurf at the in-laws “until they find a bigger place.”
Are the Marin natives looking for a place in SF, or will they remain in less urban environs? Newsom’s spokesperson couldn’t or wouldn’t say.
Needless to say, the Appeal has reached out to expert on all things Gavin Newsom Beth Spotswood. Spotswood, who is also from Marin, though she went to high school in SF and moved the the city well over a decade ago, seems ideally suited to provide her analysis.
Spotswood, however, was completely unsurprised by the news.
“I don’t see what the big deal is” she emailed from her home in SF’s Mission District. “Of course they’re moving to Marin. And while Ross is awfully obvious, I’m sure they’ll come to their senses and buy a house in Mill Valley. (Gavin, meet me at the Deuce.)”
