26grenade.jpgIf you happened to be in the Twin Peaks or Outer Sunset neighborhoods last night, you were probably having quite the explosive evening. As Appeal tipster Mark writes, “Police found old ordnance (aka bomb) from WWII up on Christopher Street…The street is cordoned off and they are going to explode it shortly. [sic]”

KRON reports the bomb turned out to be a WWII-era grenade, which was indeed found on Christopher Dr. at around 2:30pm, after which, reports the Chron, SFPD evacuated two homes.

The explosive device was then brought to Ocean Beach near Noriega by police to be detonated just before 10pm.

Ocean Beach Bulletin gives a comprehensive report of the ordnance detonation, with tweets from some nearby residents who’d either seen or heard the explosion.

“They shouted ‘fire in the hole,’ then BOOM,” area resident and author Veronica Wolff tweeted.

“It reverberated through my body” Wolff said, “FREAKED the kids out. It was right across the street…the sound was huge. Set off car alarms”
