A special retirement ceremony is planned Saturday for two four-footed members of the San Francisco Police Department.
Hawk and Hunter, two horses in the Police Department’s mounted unit, are leaving the force to spend the rest of their days at a ranch in Sonoma County, police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
Hawk, a 25-year-old American Quarter Horse, started working at the department in 1998, while Hunter, an 18-year-old American Quarter Horse, started in 2004.
Unlike their human counterparts, there is no mandatory retirement age for the horses.
Rather, the decision to retire them usually comes after consultation with a veterinarian, Dangerfield said.
The retirement ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. and will be held at the Police Department’s horse stables on James Bloesch Road, located near 36th Avenue and John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park.
