a_soccer_ball.pngA soccer match between two of the top international club teams will be held at San Francisco’s AT&T Park in July, organizers announced today.

Manchester City from the English Premier League and Club America from the Primera Division in Mexico will face off on July 16 as part of the Herbalife World Football Challenge, a friendly tournament being held around the U.S. and in Vancouver, B.C.

Other teams participating in the tournament include international clubs FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Chivas Guadalajara, and U.S. club teams such as the L.A. Galaxy, New England Revolution, Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Fire.

The match at AT&T Park will be the first since March 2005, according to Jens Weiden, marketing manager for the ballpark.

The park’s usual tenants, the World Series champion San Francisco Giants, will be out of town that weekend, so grass will be put in over the infield, and the soccer field will run from the first base line out toward the left field wall, Weiden said.

Tickets to the match will first be offered to Giants season ticket holders, and will be available to the public at a date to be announced next month.
