Supporters of the recent North African uprisings united at the UN plaza early Saturday afternoon to both congratulate the people of Tunisia and to call for the removal of Egypt’s ruler Husni Mubarak.

Countless activists garbed in red, white and black were joined by concerned peoples of all ages and background at Market and 8th at 1 PM Saturday. Speeches were given, chants and signs held, and eventually the group marched to Civic Center; flags of many Middle Eastern and African countries filling the air.

Most called for the immediate removal of Egypt’s leader, reciting chants like “Down, Down, Husni Mubarak” and waving signs that read things like “Mubarak is in De-Nile. GET OUT.”

Others were less aggressive, such as the Grandmothers Against War, or toddlers with neck signs that said “Mubarak, what did your people ever do to you.”

One thing was clear though. The crowd of thousands, of all generations and origins, was inspired and energized by the recent political actions in another hemisphere. And Saturday afternoon they let it all out; it could be seen in the unity, camaraderie, smiles, and it could be heard in the voices of those that know that “Freedom is Contagious.
