wave.jpgA man who was pronounced dead after police found him floating in the San Francisco Bay on Sunday has been identified as Roger Rains, the San Francisco medical examiner’s office said today.

Rains, 46, was seen floating face down in the water between Pier 41 and Pier 45 at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, according to police and fire officials.

Someone initially tried to throw Rains some sort of life preserver, which he did not take, fire spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

A police boat then retrieved Rains from the water and officers began performing CPR before fire crews arrived, Talmadge said.

Rains was unconscious when police retrieved him, police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. He was transported to a local hospital and declared dead, Talmadge said.

Rains did not have a permanent address, the medical examiner’s office said.

It remained unclear today why he was in the water.
