Shalako.09.29.10.jpgA man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman last week at a San Francisco public housing development was arraigned in court today on charges that could bring a sentence of life in prison, according to the district attorney’s office.

Damir Shalako, 25, is accused of raping and robbing a 45-year-old woman last Tuesday around noon at the Potrero Hill Housing Authority Development. He was arrested Friday afternoon at a park in the Mission District.

Prosecutors this morning charged Shalako with two counts of rape; sexual penetration by a foreign object, force and violence; burglary with intent to commit rape; and first-degree residential robbery, according to district attorney’s office spokesman Seth Steward.

The burglary with intent to commit rape charge alone carries a potential sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, Steward said.

According to police, Shalako had been released from prison on parole only days before the alleged attack. He was reportedly visiting family at the housing development.

Shalako is being held on $3 million bail and is due back in court Thursday, Steward said.
Attorneys for Shalako were not immediately available for comment today.
