The spirit of victory was in the air today on the streets of San Francisco as locals sported Giants caps, T-shirts and jackets following the team’s 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
The Giants captured the National League West title, the first time the team has won the division championship since 2003.
Duane Potter, a season-ticket holder, was among the crowd Sunday at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.
“Baseball is exciting,” Potter said. Then, looking toward the future, “We haven’t won a World Series in so long.”
Another fan, Steve Robbins, watched the game on TV.
“As soon as we got those two runs on the board, I was pretty confident,” Robbins said. “Brian Wilson is a real good closer.”
After Sunday’s win, most of the crowd in the packed AT&T Park stayed put to bask in the glow of the win and watch live interviews with the players on the park’s giant screen.
Outside, fire trucks decorated with Giants memorabilia drew cheers as they passed. Many exuberant fans wandered over to MoMo’s bar and Pete’s Tavern, where bartenders scrambled to keep up with the beer orders.
The Giants will face the Atlanta Braves at home on Thursday.
Thursday’s game is sold out, along with Game 2 on Friday and a potential Game 5 on Oct. 13. Tickets purchased for unplayed games will be automatically refunded.
“There are no tickets left for the Division Series,” Giants publicity director Shana Daum said. “There are tickets left for the second round, if we are so fortunate to go.”
Tickets for the potential National League Championship Series will go on sale Tuesday at 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets will only be available through the Giants website or by phone at 877-4-SFGTIX.
