Two units from the Golden Gate Division of the California Highway Patrol inspected tour buses in San Francisco on Saturday to ensure the drivers and vehicles are in full compliance with safety regulations, the CHP reported.
The patrol division’s Motor Carrier Safety and Commercial units began their inspection of tour buses at 9 a.m. at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Kirkland bus yard located at 2498 Powell St. near Pier 39 in the city, CHP said in a statement.
The San Francisco Police Department and the California Public Utilities Commission were also at the inspection to assist, the CHP statement said.
The inspection of the buses’ equipment and safety measures, as well as the drivers’ sobriety and licensing, is meant to reduce the frequency of collisions and injuries involving tour buses, the CHP said.
The Motor Carrier Safety Unit conducts about 900 safety audit inspections and 1,900 vehicle inspections throughout the San Francisco Bay Area every year, the CHP said.
Most tour bus companies and drivers uphold the “high standard” to which they are held, the CHP said.
