Hello from the Richmond District,
It looks like our newest residential complex will be opening soon – the Presidio Landmark apartments near 15th Avenue and Lake Street. You get parking, a fitness center, wine storage, massage and yoga and a home in one of our nicest parks. The price tag? $4,325 a month for a 2-bedroom. It’s the Richmond, but not really.
Earlier this year, the Internet Archive – a.k.a. archive.org and home of the wayback machine – moved into the neighborhood. They’re the ones scanning every book they can get their hands on and literally trying to build the world’s biggest, free online library for books, audio, images and more. One group took a field trip there recently and provided great insights into what the IA does and how they’re utilizing the big white church they moved into.
I wiled away several hours at the Alameda Point Antiques Fair last Sunday where I picked up some vintage postcards from the Richmond District. Check out the early views of Stow Lake, the museums, and what the sunset would have looked like from Adolph Sutro’s terrace. After seeing these images, I’m surprised not everyone wanted to move to the west side.
Next Wednesday is Bastille Day and the de Young has plans to celebrate in style. They’re throwing “French Kiss: ArtPoint’s Bastille Day Celebration,” serving up light, French inspired fare, specialty drinks, live music and of course, Impressionist masterpieces on the walls. Go immerse yourself in all things French. Tout de suite!
