A shooting in the Emeryville IKEA parking lot claimed the life of a former USF basketball star Tuesday evening.
Units responded to reports of numerous shots fired in the 4400 block of Shellmound Street at around 7:35 p.m., police said. Arriving officers reported finding several bullet shell casings in the furniture store’s parking lot.
Officers quickly located a man the Chronicle has identified as former USF player Hyman Taylor, who had been shot several times, nearby on the 3700 block of Wood Street. Medical personnel pronounced Hyman dead at the scene, police said.
A second shooting victim was found wounded in the 1500 block of 40th Street in Emeryville and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
No arrests were made and suspect information was not immediately available. According to the Chron, a motive for the shooting hasn’t been determined.
USF’s website notes that the 6’9″, 245 lb Taylor was a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 27-year-old was named to the Broward County Fab Five by both the Florida Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald in his high school days.
The Chron says that Taylor “had transferred to USF after being kicked off the Virginia Tech team before the 2005-06 season” then was suspended from the USF team with three weeks left in the 2008-2009 season “along with three other players for not complying with instructions during practice and did not play again.”
