TGIF from the Richmond!

Finally the weather is cooperating just in time to say goodbye to the school year and HELLO SUMMER!

A Richmond District tradition, Joe’s Ice Cream, re-opened its doors recently after re-locating a half block further down Geary. Despite losing their coveted corner location, the new Joe’s was booming with business. Their new home retains a lot of the old charm and there’s even more space to enjoy Joe’s homemade ice cream and grill.

Speaking of eating, the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park has a new exhibition featuring carnivorous plants. CHOMP! features all kinds of clever, complex plants that look lovely, but pack a punch for unsuspecting prey. Stop in to check it out, along with the other blooming beauties you’ll find all over the Conservatory.

If you’re looking for more uncharted territory, check out the new Park Trail that just opened in the Presidio. It connects the Richmond District to Crissy Field and this Saturday, they’re giving a guided tour in honor of National Trails Day. I hear the views are great.

In celebrity news, infamous director John Waters popped in to sign copies of his new book, “Role Models”, at Green Apple Books. How great is that blazer he’s wearing?!

The Bay to Breakers is long over but don’t tell that to the South End Rowing Club who on Memorial Day, SWAM the race instead. They departed from the Bay Bridge and emerged from the water 2.5 hours later at Ocean Beach’s Kirby Cove. Hardcore to say the least.

In food news, the neighborhood is abuzz over a new joint history project between the library and the Internet Archive called “Richmond Eats”. Through this Saturday, stop by the Richmond branch library to contribute restaurant menus, recipes, or food-related photographs from the Richmond District (1850s to the present).

I’ll leave you this week with some video inside the Giant Camera out at the Cliff House. It’s a camera obscura to be precise, and the 360 degree views you see of Ocean Beach and the Great Highway from inside the building are pretty stellar.

Have a great weekend everyone!
