muni_generic.jpg10:43 AM: The SF MTA says that regular service through the Sunset Tunnel has resumed, but it’s safe to assume that you can expect delays, crowding, etc. Muni seems to share our assumption — they say that the shuttle buses will keep on shuttling until things go back to normal.

Muni Diaries is reporting that Twitter user Peter Burnham says the line issues happened because “Someone stole the copper wires Muni runs on out of the tunnel in the Haight. Thanks stealers.

We haven’t been able to confirm with the MTA that that was, indeed, the issue — any of you Muni Superfans out there want to weigh in on how feasible Burnham’s assertion is?

7:56 AM: The situation in the Sunset Tunnel’s gone from bad to worse — while earlier this morning, a downed wire in the Sunset Tunnel was requiring the N Judah to be delayed as they entered the tunnel one at a time, as of 7:38, the MTA tells us, they’ve had to close the tunnel completely.

Instead, inbound N Judah trains (that’s the trains going downtown) stop at at Carl and Hillway and outbound stop at Church and Duboce, with shuttle buses getting you between those two points. We’re getting reports that the delays are pretty bad, so if you’re a N rider who has another option, by all means, take it.

7:42 AM: Repairs to the downed wire that’s disrupting and delaying N Judah service may last through the morning rush, the SF MTA has clarified.

At around 5 this morning, a downed wire in the Sunset Tunnel (that’s the one between Duboce Park and Cole Valley) disrupted service, causing the N to single track through the tunnel in both travel directions. According to the MTA, “N Line vehicles will pause at either end of the Tunnel to allow for the trains that are single-tracking through the tunnel.”

Since this will, understandably, cause delays, shuttle buses are offering supplimentary service “between Ocean Beach and the Van Ness Metro Station, via the Haight Street detour and stopping at Church and Duboce streets.”

While crews are said to be on the scene, they expect repairs to continue until about 9:30 this morning.

6:47 AM: The SF MTA’s just alerted us that, since 5:02 this morning, an overhead line problem in the Sunset Tunnel (that’s the one between Cole Valley and Duboce Park) N Judah service is disrupted.

They say that “bus shuttles have been deployed between Church and Duboce streets, the entrance of the Tunnel at Duboce Park and Carl and Cole streets” which we think means that if your trip includes the tunnel, you’ll be hopping a bus for that part of your journey.
