Hello from the eroding Richmond!

We lost a chunk of the Great Highway recently due to all these rains. Because of the damage, lanes of the Great Highway near Sloat are closed off, indefinitely. So I recommend hanging out at the Kelly’s Cove end of Ocean Beach.

Last week, someone pointed out to me that in last year’s Star Trek movie, the Starfleet Academy was located right in the Sea Cliff / Baker Beach area. Cool, right? But my commenters are debating whether it’s the SF or Marin side. Check it out and help settle the debate.

Are you a fan of animation? Legendary Russian animator Yuri Norstein will appear in person at the Balboa Theater next Sunday night. He has a very cool technique that is old school – no computers allowed. He’ll present a few of his works, including bits of “Overcoat”, which he has been working on since 1985. No joke.

I came across some great, historic Richmond District videos last week from the Library of Congress. Two are of the water slides in Sutro Baths in 1897, the only video I’ve ever seen of the landmark. I’ve embedded the one of the gents slipping and sliding below; see the ladies go for it over on my blog.

The other video is from 1903 and shows us Ocean Beach on a busy, pleasant day. You’ve never seen so many suits in the sand! Great shots of long-gone buildings and the pier that used to be on the beach.

Have a great weekend everyone!
