5:10 PM: Hey, west of 19th Ave commuters — your ride home tonight might not be that bad. The MTA’s Judson True has announced that as of 4:50 this afternoon, the N Judah is running all the way down to the beach, and that Sunset Blvd, is expected to reopen at 6 tonight. Update: True says Sunset reopened at 9:05 PM.
This after a delay of just over 12 hours — Sunset was expected to reopen for light rail and cars a 5 this morning. However, as True reiterates this afternoon, “the concrete being used in the project did not harden as quickly as designed.”
He continues “the SFMTA continues to work with the contractor to investigate this problem; no conclusions are expected until early December. All concrete poured this weekend has been tested and certified as safe for light rail operation.” Which is kind of comforting?
5:17 AM: If your morning commute involves the N Judah west of 19th Avenue, be prepared for some disruption Monday morning — the “Rail Improvement Project,” a weekend construction project to the rails has been delayed due to problems with the concrete being used in said improvements.
Blessedly, this past weekend’s work at 19th Avenue is on track to be done on schedule, and the area should be reopened by 5 AM Monday.
The closure at Judah and Sunset is a different story. According to MTA spokesperson Judson True, “the concrete being used in the project is not hardening as quickly as designed.” Therefore, buses will continue to serve N Judah passengers between 19th Avenue and Ocean Beach, and the intersection of Sunset and Judah will remain closed.
True says that they expect this issue to be resolved by 5 AM Tuesday, and that “the SFMTA is working with the contractor to investigate this problem. The concrete is being tested to be sure that it is safe for light rail operation.”
